Advertising Flags Dubai — Complete Guide to Feather, Teardrop, L-Shape and Sail Flags

Advertising flags Dubai — feather teardrop L-shape and sail flags printed on knitted polyester and satin by Zahrat Al Madina Printing Umm Ramool

Advertising flags in Dubai are printed fabric banners on a pole and base that make a storefront, exhibition booth or event area visible from a distance. Most businesses choose between four types: feather, teardrop, L-shape and sail flags. The right one depends on where it will stand, how much wind and sun it faces, how much floor space you have and how long it will stay up.

This guide compares the four types using our current sizes, fabrics and base options, then covers design, placement permissions and ordering, with answers to common questions at the end. If you already know what you need, browse all custom flags printing in Dubai or send your requirements on WhatsApp at +971 4 229 4522.

What Are Advertising Flags and How Do They Work?

An advertising flag, also called a promotional flag, banner flag or flying banner, has three parts: the printed fabric graphic, a pole (usually sold in sections) and a base that holds it upright. Unlike a roll-up banner or a printed sign, a flag adds height and movement, so it can be seen over parked cars, crowds and neighbouring stands.

Flags are used for storefront promotions, grand openings, exhibitions, real estate sales offices, car showrooms, hotels, sports events and national celebrations. The same artwork can be reprinted in a different flag shape or size for a new location.

The Four Main Advertising Flag Types Used in Dubai

Dubai’s outdoor conditions (strong sun, humidity, coastal wind and heavy foot and vehicle traffic) affect which shape performs best. Whatever the type, any flag should stand on a suitable base and be lowered or removed in strong wind.

Feather Flags

Feather flags are tall, blade-shaped flags with a curved top edge that tapers to a point. The open, lightweight shape moves freely in low wind, and the movement draws the eye. They suit storefronts, retail strips, roadside branding and outdoor events, including busy routes such as Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Quoz.

  • Best for: storefronts, roadside visibility, events and exhibition stands
  • Sizes: Small, Medium and Large, with 3 m, 4 m and 5 m poles, plus custom sizes
  • Fabrics: German Knitted Polyester, Taffeta Satin (glossy or matte) and Blockout Fabric
  • Bases: spike, cross, 12 kg metal and concrete (25 kg to 80 kg); a water base is not available for feather flags
  • Watch out for: a Large feather flag in a fully exposed permanent spot needs the heaviest base, 80 kg

Teardrop Flags

Teardrop flags have a rounded, closed top that curves down to a point at the base. The curved pole pulls the fabric taut, so the print stays more readable in windy spots such as hotel forecourts and coastal locations. They suit semi-permanent installations at entrances, showrooms and outdoor dining areas.

  • Best for: entrances, forecourts, showrooms and restaurants
  • Sizes: Small, Medium and Large, with 3.5 m, 4.5 m and 5.5 m poles, plus custom sizes
  • Fabrics: German Knitted Polyester and Taffeta Satin (glossy or matte); Blockout Fabric is not available for teardrop flags
  • Bases: spike, cross, 12 kg metal, water base for Small indoor flags, and concrete up to 45 kg
  • Watch out for: Medium and Large share the same 110 cm fabric width, so Large adds height, not print area

L-Shape Flags

L-shape flags have a reinforced horizontal arm at the top of the pole, so the fabric hangs fully stretched even in still air. That keeps the whole graphic readable, which suits exhibition stands, roadside rows, building entrances and indoor displays.

  • Best for: exhibitions, narrow entrances, roadside rows and indoor displays
  • Sizes: Small, Medium, Large and XLarge, with 3 m, 4 m, 5 m and 6 m poles; fabric width is 90 cm on all sizes
  • Fabrics: German Knitted Polyester, Taffeta Satin (glossy or matte) and Blockout Fabric
  • Pole: aluminium, in sections that assemble without tools; the fabric slides on through a stitched sleeve
  • Bases: concrete only, matched to height: 30 kg, 45 kg, 80 kg and 240 kg
  • Watch out for: the arm adds width at the top, so check ceiling height and neighbouring stands

Exhibitors often place L-shape flags beside a fabric backdrop to frame the stand.

Sail Flags

Sail flags are tall and narrow, held open by a curved top section of the pole, which keeps the print visible whether or not there is wind. You can choose a flat, inner-curve or outer-curve bottom edge. The shape changes the silhouette, not the performance or the base you need.

  • Best for: shop entrances, roadsides, exhibitions, open-air events and large frontages
  • Sizes: Small, Medium and Large (200, 300 and 400 cm fabric heights, 85 cm wide, on 3 m, 4 m and 5 m poles), plus custom sizes
  • Fabrics: German Knitted Polyester, Taffeta Satin (glossy or matte) and Blockout Fabric
  • Pole: thick powder-coated aluminium in sections that assemble without tools
  • Bases: eight options, from water and spike bases to an 80 kg concrete base
  • Watch out for: Large flags outdoors need a 45 kg or 80 kg concrete base

Fabric Options: Which One Suits Dubai?

Best for

German Knitted Polyester

Single-sided, mirror image on the reverse

Matte

Covered or semi-sheltered locations

Taffeta Satin

Double-sided, two printed panels with a blockout layer between

Glossy

Fully exposed outdoor sites and flags seen from both sides

Taffeta Satin Matte

Double-sided, same construction

Matte

Strong direct light where glare would hurt readability

Blockout Fabric

Double-sided on one blockout layer

Super matte

Maximum opacity and no glare (not available for teardrop flags)

For fully exposed outdoor flags in Dubai’s heat, we recommend Taffeta Satin because it is thicker than knitted polyester and holds up better under long sun exposure. With double-sided fabrics, each side carries its own print, so the reverse is not a mirror image.

How to Choose the Right Advertising Flag

  1. Where will it stand? Grass or sand takes a spike base. Tiles, concrete and exhibition floors need a cross, water or concrete base.
  2. Indoors or outdoors? Indoors, small flags on a water, cross or metal base work well. Outdoors, plan a concrete base matched to the flag height.
  3. How windy is the spot? Open waterfront, rooftop and forecourt locations are windier than courtyards and malls. Choose a closed-top teardrop, an L-shape or a sail flag and a heavy base for exposed sites.
  4. Who needs to see it, and from how far? Roadside viewers see a flag for seconds, so use a tall flag and a short, bold message. Booth visitors can read more.
  5. Is it temporary or long-term? Event flags can be lighter. Flags that stay up for weeks or months need Taffeta Satin, a heavier base and regular checks.

Durability in Dubai’s Sun and Wind

Sunlight, heat, humidity and wind wear flags faster than most printed items, so fabric and base choice matter. Taffeta Satin handles exposed sites better than knitted polyester, and sail and L-shape flags use aluminium poles that resist corrosion. No flag is wind-proof, so inspect edges and stitching regularly, lower or remove flags in strong wind and replace a flag when colours fade or edges fray.

Designing a Flag That Works From a Distance

  • One message only: a logo, a short headline and one contact detail.
  • High contrast: dark on light or the reverse; avoid thin lettering and busy backgrounds.
  • Large logo, minimal text: if people must read more than about seven words, simplify.
  • Check both sides: on single-sided knitted polyester, text appears reversed on the back, so use a double-sided fabric when both faces will be seen.
  • Send print-ready files: AI or PDF vector files, or a high-resolution PNG. We check resolution and colour accuracy before production and can help with layout.

Placement, Permits and Safety in Dubai

Flags on your own premises usually need landlord or building management approval. Flags in public areas, on roadsides, in free zones, or at malls and event venues may need an advertising permit or organiser approval, and the rules depend on the location.

As one example, the Dubai Development Authority publishes an advertising permit service that lists an annual fee for flags and free-standing units within its jurisdiction. Requirements and fees differ by authority and area, so confirm with your landlord, venue or the relevant authority before installing. We cannot give legal advice, but we can recommend the size and base for your application.

Keep flags clear of walkways and driver sightlines, and use a base heavy enough for the height.

Where Advertising Flags Work Best in Dubai

  • Exhibitions: L-shape, sail and feather flags mark stand locations at events such as GITEX, Cityscape and Arab Health.
  • Retail and showrooms: feather and sail flags at shop entrances and along commercial strips.
  • Roadside and corporate sites: rows of Large sail or L-shape flags at roadsides, building entrances and car park perimeters.
  • Real estate launches: flags at site entrances and sales offices during launch events and open days.
  • Hotels and hospitality: teardrop or sail flags lining entrance driveways and outdoor reception areas.
  • UAE National Day on 2 December: sail and L-shape flags in national colours on building frontages. See our guide to UAE National Day flags and gifts.

Frequently Asked Questions About Advertising Flags in Dubai

What sizes do advertising flags come in?

Feather flags use 3 m, 4 m and 5 m poles, teardrop flags 3.5 m, 4.5 m and 5.5 m, sail flags 3 m, 4 m and 5 m, and L-shape flags 3 m, 4 m, 5 m and 6 m. Custom sizes are available for every type. See the sizes table above for fabric dimensions.

What is the difference between feather and teardrop flags?

A feather flag has a curved edge and an open, lightweight shape that moves in low wind. A teardrop flag has a rounded closed top that holds the fabric taut, so the print stays more readable in windy spots. A Large feather flag in a fully exposed spot needs an 80 kg base, while a Large teardrop needs 45 kg.

Which advertising flag is best for a storefront?

Feather flags are a common storefront choice because they are tall and move in light wind, which catches the eye of passers-by. Sail flags suit shopfronts that want maximum height, and teardrop flags suit entrances where you want the print to stay readable in wind.

Which flag is best for an exhibition stand?

L-shape flags keep the fabric fully stretched even indoors, so the graphic is always readable. Small or Medium feather flags on a cross base or 12 kg metal base are also popular on hard exhibition floors.

Which fabric is best for outdoor flags in Dubai?

For fully exposed outdoor sites we recommend Taffeta Satin, which is thicker than knitted polyester and lasts longer in heat and sun. German Knitted Polyester suits covered or semi-sheltered locations.

Should I choose single-sided or double-sided printing?

German Knitted Polyester is single-sided, with a mirror image on the reverse. Taffeta Satin, Taffeta Satin Matte and Blockout Fabric are double-sided, with an independent print on each side, so choose them when people see the flag from both directions.

Which base should I choose?

Use a spike on grass or sand, a cross or 12 kg metal base for temporary hard-surface setups, a water base for small indoor flags, and a concrete base for long-term display. For exposed permanent sites, use 45 kg for Medium and Large feather, teardrop and sail flags, and 80 kg for Large feather and sail flags. L-shape flags use 30 kg, 45 kg, 80 kg or 240 kg concrete bases depending on size.

Can advertising flags be used indoors?

Yes. Small teardrop and sail flags work indoors on a water base, small flags on a cross or 12 kg metal base, and L-shape flags on a concrete base. Tell us the surface when you order and we will confirm the base.

Do I need a permit to put up advertising flags in Dubai?

It depends on where the flag stands. Private premises usually need landlord approval, while public areas, free zones, malls and event venues may need a permit or organiser approval. Check with the relevant authority or venue before installing.

How long does flag printing take?

Orders of up to 10 flags may be ready within 24 to 48 hours after artwork approval. Larger orders generally take 2 to 3 business days, depending on quantity and fabric. Contact us with your size, quantity and deadline to confirm the fastest slot.

Do you deliver and install flags?

We deliver across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, and to other emirates on request. Installation is available in Dubai only. Outside Dubai, poles, bases and hardware are included so you can assemble the flags on site.

Is there a minimum order, and are custom sizes possible?

There is no fixed minimum, and we can produce from a single flag. Custom sizes are available for all four types when the standard sizes do not fit your location.

What file format should I send for artwork?

Send your logo as an AI or PDF vector file, or a high-resolution PNG. We check resolution and colour accuracy before production starts.

How do I clean and store my flag?

Wash gently by hand with mild soap and cool water, let it dry fully, and store it rolled or folded loosely away from direct sun. Avoid harsh chemicals and machine drying.

How much do advertising flags cost in Dubai?

Price depends on type, size, fabric, print sides, base and quantity. Send your requirements on WhatsApp for an exact quote.
